President Goodluck Jonathan seeks better management of oil revenue

ABUJA — Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan said Monday he has proposed legislation aimed at improving the country’s handling of its oil revenue by creating a special fund for savings and infrastructure.
The announcement comes ahead of January elections and follows a list of proposals from Jonathan related to the country’s poor infrastructure, including plans to remake the country’s woefully inadequate power sector. (more…)
Road from Calabar to Lagos would cost about N1.8 trillion

Abuja—THE proposed 650-kilometre East-West coastal road from Calabar to Lagos would cost about N1.8 trillion. The design for the project is 70 per cent completed.
Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mr. Chibuzor Ugwoha who stated this in Lagos yesterday, also called on the federal government to pay its N500 billion debt to the commission.
In an interactive session with newsmen, he said the design of the project would be completed in December paving the way for the commission to engage all stakeholders who would finance the project. (more…)

Nigeria’s Central Bank Releases 300 Billion Naira for Power

Nigeria’s central bank released 300 billion naira ($2 billion) to boost investment in the West African country’s power and aviation industries.
The money, part of a 500 billion-naira fund announced in March, is available to companies involved in producing, distributing and transmitting electricity, and in aviation, the Abuja-based Central Bank of Nigeria said today in a statement on its website. (more…)

ABUJA—Nigerian ex-military ruler Ibrahim Babangida will run for president in upcoming elections, nearly two decades after he controversially overturned a ballot viewed as fair, a statement said Monday.

Little wonder then that no less than 50 music and movie artistes, perhaps representing the entire entertainment industry in Nigeria gathered in Federal Capital Territory to urge President Goodluck Jonathan to run in the forthcoming 2011 presidential elections.
